Convict hire invoices, 1883-1926.

Various Ala. enterprises contracted with the State government to provide convict laborers. This series consists of monthly account sheets for convict hire. The sheets total the amount due to the state by the contractor for convict leasing. These companies would pay the state which would in turn pay the convict laborers. The sheets contain such information as the number of convicts, the class of convict, the number of days worked, the amount charged per day and the amount due. The invoices also indicate in the name of the company hiring the convict laborers. Companies include the Montevallo Mining Company, Pratt Consolidated Coal Company, Bessemer Coal and Iron Co., Sloss-Sheffield Steel and Iron Co., Horse Shoe Lumber Company, and Thomas and Weller Mining Company. The reports were signed by the State Superintendent of Convicts and forwarded to the State Auditor for his review and filing.
